Who, what and why?

In 2017 Finland celebrates its 100 years of independence. This happens to be a special year for the Canadian Republic as well and to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Canadian Republic, Rendez-Vous 2017 takes The Tall Ships across the Atlantic and back during the Summer of 2017. The sailing is divided into race legs and calmer transition legs between participating ports. We are going to participate in the transatlantic race leg, and hopefully win!

Our ten-man crew consists of eager young sailors with countless nautical miles of sailing experience aboard multiple vessels. Among them the vessels of the Sail Training Association Finland: Schooner Helena and S/Y Vahine. The about 3000 nautical mile adventure is full of challenges as our team battles the forces of nature on Vahine, a legendary Finnish Swan 65.

The race starts from Portugal 29.4.2017 and the regatta follows a route taking them to Las Palmas, Bermuda and eventually to Boston USA. The race rules state that all vessels must make a 48 hour stop in Las Palmas. The stop after the Atlantic crossing in Bermuda will be a bit longer. The plan is to arrive in Boston a week before midsummer and from there Vahine will continue with the Regatta towards Canada with a fresh crew.

In addition to racing, the goal of the project is to bring sailing closer to the youth and lower the threshold for picking up the sport. The project is organized by The Sail Trainees of Finland and a key theme is promoting Finland as a brand. Our team is 100% Finnish and we are racing a Finnish built Swan 65. The legendary 65-model won the first ever Volvo Ocean Race in 1974. Back then it was called the Whitbread Round The World Race. We wish to honor that legacy and sail the Swan 65 S/Y Vahine, owned by Sail Training Association Finland, to victory on the longest race leg from Portugal to Bermuda. Together The Sail Trainees of Finland and Sail Training Association Finland are actively helping new sailors through training and grants.

Sunburned today, tanned tomorrow – NOT

To the paper white Finns tanning is an annual competition. A perfect tan is something people use money and time on. We know carotene, solarium, sunbathing for hours are not the keys to a beautiful tan. Sun is not anything to play with because without protection, it could cost your life. Although sailing is sometimes […]

Ambronite will sponsor Aava Transatlantic Sailing!

We approached Ambronite a while ago. Ambronite is a company started by five Finnish friends specializing in drinkable supermeals. In layman’s terms this means a powder made from whole foods, that when mixed with water turns into a smoothie. Ambronite is perfect for those moments when you simply do not have time to make something […]

Finnish brand VAI-KØ will sponsor Aava Transatlantic!

Why VAI-KØ ? Locally, ecologically and ethically produced, 5 % charity promise and overall extremely cool. For these reasons we decided to co-operate with the Finnish merino wool beanie brand VAI-KØ. As we started making our packing list it we realized that every crew member should, at least, have a beanie that would work both onboard […]
